Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the speaker of Iran’s parliament, mocked U.S. claims that American warships escorted an oil tanker through the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes.

“An oil tanker crossed the Strait of Hormuz escorted by U.S. Navy ships? Maybe on PlayStation!” Ghalibaf said sarcastically, dismissing the reports.

The remark comes amid escalating tensions between Iran and the United States as fears grow over the security of global oil shipments through the narrow waterway, where roughly a fifth of the world’s oil supply passes each day.
