Icelandic Plokkfiskur – Creamy Fish Stew
A traditional Icelandic dish made with boiled fish, potatoes, onions, and white sauce. It’s humble, hearty, and perfect for cold northern days.
Ingredients (Serves 4):
* 400g white fish fillets (cod or haddock)
* 500g potatoes, peeled and diced
* 1 small onion, chopped
* 50g butter
* 2 tbsp flour
* 300ml milk
* Salt and white pepper
* Optional: chives or parsley
Instructions:
1. Boil potatoes until tender. Drain and set aside.
2. Poach fish gently in salted water until just cooked. Flake and set aside.
3. In a pan, sauté onion in butter, stir in flour to make a roux.
4. Gradually add milk, whisking to form a smooth white sauce.
5. Add fish and potatoes; stir gently. Season and garnish.

Serve with dark rye bread and butter for a true Icelandic touch.
