Scientists are actively developing tiny micro- and nanorobots that could one day clean cholesterol from blood vessels without surgery. These machines are designed to be guided through the bloodstream using magnets or smart navigation systems to break down or remove cholesterol plaques. Several studies have shown success in lab settings and animal models, using technologies like spiral-shaped microrobots, magnetic nano-swarms, and HDL-mimicking nanoparticles that can dissolve or carry away plaque. However, as of now, there is no approved medical device or robot available for human use that can perform this task without surgery. The technology is still in the research and preclinical stage, meaning it's being tested in simulations or animals but not yet in people.
