In 2017, as California wildfires tore toward Roland Handel’s home, he had seconds to act. His Great Pyrenees, Odin, refused to leave the eight goats he was guarding. With flames closing in and his daughter in the car, Handel opened the gates so the animals could escape and drove away, fearing the worst.
When he returned the next day, everything was gone — the house, the barn, all their belongings. But in the middle of the ashes stood Odin, burned and exhausted, guarding all eight goats alive and safe.
