The fallout from a viral postgame phone call with President Donald Trump continues to follow the U.S. men’s hockey team after their gold medal victory. During the call, Trump invited the team to the White House and the State of the Union, then joked that he would need to invite the women’s team as well—or risk being “impeached.” As the players return to their NHL teams, questions about the incident have persisted.

Goalie Jeremy Swayman addressed the situation on Wednesday, acknowledging that he and his teammates, some of whom laughed at Trump’s remark, could have responded more appropriately.

“We should’ve reacted differently,” Swayman, a star for the Boston Bruins, told Evan Marinofsky of New England Hockey Journal.

“We have immense respect for the women’s team, and celebrating that gold medal alongside them is something we will always be grateful for.”
