An Uber ride turned into a life-changing moment.

Tim Letts, a 33-year-old Army veteran and Uber driver, met 71-year-old passenger Bill Sumiel during a trip from a dialysis center in Newark, New Jersey, to his home in Salem in October 2021. During the ride, Sumiel shared that he had been waiting more than three years for a kidney transplant while battling kidney failure caused by chronic diabetes.

Touched by his story, Letts made an incredible offer — he would donate one of his own kidneys. After medical tests confirmed they were a match, doctors successfully performed the transplant surgery.

The operation gave Sumiel a second chance at life, freeing him from dialysis and allowing him to return to normal daily activities.

Today, the two remain close friends, proving that a simple ride can lead to an extraordinary act of kindness.
