On January 31, people in St. Petersburg saw an incredible sight — four glowing moons in the night sky.

This rare phenomenon, called Paraselene or “moon dogs,” happens when moonlight passes through ice crystals in the atmosphere, bending the light and creating bright spots around the real moon.

Because moonlight is dim, such multi-moon displays are extremely rare — making this icy Russian night a truly spectacular event.
