A special moment at the zoo

Utah’s Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City welcomed a healthy male giraffe calf on January 26, 2025. The newborn weighed about 139 pounds and stood 5 feet 8 inches tall at birth. His mother, Minka, a first-time mom, delivered him naturally inside the zoo’s African Savanna barn while the animal care team carefully monitored the birth.

Giraffe calves enter the world in a dramatic way, dropping nearly six feet from their standing mother during birth. To keep the calf safe, the zoo team prepared a cushioned landing area to soften the fall. Soon after landing, the little giraffe found his footing and began walking within minutes, a strong sign of good health.

The father, a bull giraffe named Ja, was later introduced to the newborn. In a touching moment captured on camera, both parents leaned toward their calf, creating a heartwarming scene that quickly went viral online.

What feels like safe, shallow water can still hide danger. On May 6, 2017, 10-year-old Juliana Ossa was playing in the designated swim area at Lake Mary Jane in Moss Park near Orlando, Florida. She was sitting in only about two feet of water, roughly 30 feet from the shore, surrounded by family members with lifeguards and safety buoys nearby. Suddenly, an alligator nearly nine feet long rushed in and clamped onto her leg.

Juliana screamed and tried hitting the animal, but it wouldn’t let go. In that terrifying moment, she remembered something she had learned during a visit to Gatorland: if you block an alligator’s nostrils, it may release its grip to breathe. Acting quickly, she pushed two fingers into the alligator’s nose. The animal loosened its jaws just enough for her to escape.

A nearby man rushed into the water to help her while lifeguards treated her wounds. Juliana needed several stitches but recovered quickly. Her story shows how staying calm and remembering one small piece of knowledge can make a life-saving difference.

Sgt. 1st Class Nicole Amor, 39, of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, was killed on March 1, 2026, after an Iranian drone strike hit a command center in Port Shuaiba. She was serving during Operation Epic Fury and was reportedly just days away from returning home to her husband and two children.
According to reports, Amor had been moved to a vulnerable shipping container shortly before the attack — a detail that highlights how unpredictable and dangerous deployed environments can be, even in locations meant for coordination and support.
Her death has drawn renewed attention to the risks faced by U.S. service members stationed overseas and the sacrifices made not only by those in uniform, but also by the families waiting for them to return home.
Many across the country are remembering Sgt. Amor for her service, dedication, and the life she gave in duty to her country.
