Classic Burger Sauce, the go to burger sauce in our house and for good reason!

Alright, buckle up, because we're about to make the best burger sauce this side of the Mississippi (or wherever you happen to be!). This is my go-to recipe, the one I've tweaked and perfected over years of flipping patties and slathering burgers. It's got that classic tang, a hint of sweetness, and a creamy richness that'll make your taste buds sing.

Recipe: Classic Burger Sauce - Your New Go-To

Yields: Approximately 1 cup (enough for about 6-8 burgers) Prep Time: 5 minutes No cooking required! Skill Level: Ridiculously Easy

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Mayonnaise: Full-fat mayonnaise is key for that creamy texture and rich flavor. Don't skimp!
  • 2 tablespoons Ketchup: Adds sweetness and that classic burger sauce color.
  • 1 tablespoon Yellow Mustard: Provides a tangy bite that cuts through the richness.
  • 1 tablespoon Sweet Pickle Relish: The star of the show! Adds texture, sweetness, and a subtle vinegary tang. If you only have dill relish, add a pinch of sugar to compensate for the lack of sweetness.
  • 1 teaspoon White Vinegar: Brightens the flavors and adds a necessary zing.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Garlic Powder: For a savory depth.
  • 1/4 teaspoon Paprika: Adds a subtle smoky note and a beautiful color. Smoked paprika works wonders here if you have it!
  • Pinch of Cayenne Pepper (Optional): If you like a little heat, a tiny pinch of cayenne will do the trick.
  • Salt and Freshly Ground Black Pepper: To taste. Don't be shy!

Equipment:

  • Small bowl
  • Spoon or whisk

Instructions:

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a small bowl, add the mayonnaise, ketchup, yellow mustard, sweet pickle relish, white vinegar, garlic powder, paprika, and cayenne pepper (if using).

  2. Mix Thoroughly: Use a spoon or whisk to combine all the ingredients until they are completely smooth and homogenous. Make sure there are no lumps of mayonnaise or relish clinging together.

  3. Season to Taste: Add salt and pepper to taste. Start with a pinch of each and adjust to your liking. Remember, the relish already contains some salt, so go easy at first.

  4. Chill (Recommended): While you can use the sauce immediately, it's best to chill it in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld and deepen. Overnight is even better!

  5. Serve and Enjoy! Spread generously on your favorite burger buns. This sauce is also fantastic with fries, onion rings, or even as a dipping sauce for chicken nuggets.

Chef's Notes & Variations:

  • Spice it Up: Add a dash of hot sauce (like Tabasco or Sriracha) for extra heat.
  • Smoky Flavor: Use smoked paprika or a drop of liquid smoke for a deeper, smoky flavor profile.
  • Sweet Tooth? A tiny drizzle of maple syrup or a pinch of brown sugar can enhance the sweetness.
  • Fresh Herbs: Mince some fresh parsley or chives and add them to the sauce for a pop of freshness.
  • Make it Vegan: Use vegan mayonnaise for a plant-based version.
  • Storage: Store leftover sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Why this sauce works:

This recipe balances sweet, tangy, savory, and creamy elements perfectly. The mayonnaise provides the richness, the ketchup and relish add sweetness, the mustard and vinegar provide the tang, and the garlic and paprika add savory depth. The chilling time is crucial because it allows all those flavors to meld together and create a truly harmonious burger sauce.

Enjoy! Let me know what you think! This sauce is so good, you'll be putting it on everything. Happy grilling!
