Easy Honey Baked Ham [oc]

Alright folks, Chef here, and today we're doing a foolproof, knock-your-socks-off Honey Baked Ham. This recipe is so easy, it practically cooks itself. Forget about fancy glazes and fussy techniques, we're going for maximum flavor with minimal effort.

Easy Honey Baked Ham (OC - Original Creation)

Estimated Cooking Time: 1 hour 15 minutes - 1 hour 45 minutes (depending on ham size and oven) Serving Size: Approximately 10-12 people (depending on ham size)

Ingredients:

  • 1 (8-10 lb) Fully Cooked, Bone-In Spiral Sliced Ham: This is key! Spiral sliced saves you a ton of time and ensures even flavor distribution.
  • 1/2 cup Prepared Yellow Mustard: Don't skimp, the tang is crucial!
  • 1/2 cup Apple Cider Vinegar: Adds a nice acidity that balances the sweetness.
  • 3/4 cup Honey: The star of the show! Use good quality honey for the best flavor.
  • 1/4 cup Brown Sugar (packed): Adds depth and caramelization.
  • 1 tbsp Garlic Powder: Because everything is better with garlic.
  • 1 tbsp Onion Powder: Enhances the savory notes.
  • 1 tsp Smoked Paprika: A hint of smokiness elevates the flavor profile.
  • Optional Garnish: Fresh orange slices, whole cloves (for poking into the ham)

Equipment:

  • Large Roasting Pan with Rack
  • Small Saucepan
  • Basting Brush
  • Aluminum Foil

Instructions:

  1. Prep the Ham (30 minutes before cooking): Remove the ham from the refrigerator at least 30 minutes before cooking to allow it to come closer to room temperature. This helps it cook more evenly. Remove the ham from its packaging and discard the packet of glaze that sometimes comes with it (we're making something much better!).

  2. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C). Place the roasting rack inside the roasting pan.

  3. Make the Glaze: In a small saucepan over medium heat, whisk together the mustard, apple cider vinegar, honey, brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, and smoked paprika. Bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring constantly, until the brown sugar is fully dissolved and the glaze is slightly thickened (about 5-7 minutes). Remove from heat.

  4. Prepare the Ham for Baking: Place the ham cut-side down (flat side down) on the roasting rack in the pan. If desired, gently score the surface of the ham with a sharp knife in a diamond pattern. Stud each diamond intersection with a whole clove if you are using them. This is mostly for presentation but adds a nice aroma.

  5. Bake the Ham: Cover the ham loosely with aluminum foil. This prevents the ham from drying out during the initial cooking. Bake for approximately 10-12 minutes per pound of ham, or until the internal temperature reaches 140°F (60°C). Do NOT overcook, or it will be dry.

  6. Glaze the Ham (Last 30 minutes of Cooking): Remove the ham from the oven. Increase the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C). Remove the foil from the ham. Generously brush the ham with about half of the honey glaze. Return the ham to the oven, uncovered. Baste the ham with the remaining glaze every 10 minutes for the last 30 minutes of cooking time. This will create a beautiful, sticky, caramelized crust.

  7. Rest the Ham: Once the ham reaches an internal temperature of 140°F (60°C) remove it from the oven. Tent it loosely with foil and let it rest for at least 15-20 minutes before carving. This allows the juices to redistribute, resulting in a more tender and flavorful ham.

  8. Carve and Serve: Carve the ham by cutting around the bone and then slicing the meat away. Arrange the slices on a serving platter. Garnish with fresh orange slices, if desired. Serve immediately.

Chef's Tips & Notes:

  • Ham Temperature: Using a meat thermometer is the most accurate way to ensure your ham is perfectly cooked. Insert the thermometer into the thickest part of the ham, away from the bone.
  • Don't Waste the Juices: After carving, pour any accumulated pan juices over the ham slices for extra flavor and moisture.
  • Leftovers: Leftover ham is fantastic in sandwiches, salads, omelets, quiche, or even diced and added to pasta dishes.
  • Glaze Variations: Feel free to customize the glaze with your favorite flavors. A splash of bourbon or a pinch of red pepper flakes can add a unique twist. You could also add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg for the holidays.

Enjoy your delicious and easy Honey Baked Ham! It's sure to be a crowd-pleaser. Bon appétit!
